We often chafe at these obligations. Yet in the civilizations shaped by Christianity, people have come to see that living up to these responsibilities is a great adventure and worth the effort. God wants us to love our children into existence, as a by-product of loving our spouses.
To summarize, when society organizes itself around Godâs view of marriage, here is what we get:
· Love is a meaningful and central concept.
· Children have the lifelong commitment of their parents.
· People are loved into existence by God and by their natural parents.
· Everyone, at least in principle, is accountable to God, who stands outside the created order.
· The objective moral order exists independently of the will of the strongest, including the State.
· God created men and women, equally in his image and likeness.
· Marriage is an icon of the relationship between Jesus Christ and His bride, the Church.
· Patriarchy requires men to sacrifice themselves for their wives and children.
Conclusion: Comparing the Stateâs Marriage
with Godâs Marriage
This is what Christians believe: God loves each of us into existence and wants us to participate in His creative process through love. At the center of the universe is a deep abiding love. We are called to be part of it. We are not ashamed to believe this.
We invite each reader to consider: are you really satisfied with the alternative the modern secular world has created? We invite everyone to accept the challenge to live as if we are loved into existence.
